The ceiling of a building is often overlooked. For interior designers, the ceiling makes a crucial statement on elegance and style. For building engineers, the ceiling is about hazard prevention and practicality. For the building owners and occupants, it may also be comfort and prestige.

There are many variations on the different types of materials that are appropriate for a ceiling, but some materials are more common or popular than others.

Traditionally wooden boards are commonly used as a ceiling key component for residential buildings. This is probably due to historical reasons and lack of viable options in the past. However, interior designers also used decorative wooden materials ceiling cover. An entire ceiling may be covered in wooden planks, just like a wooden floor, or may have strategically placed planks to add feature to an otherwise plain ceiling. Wood is a good heat insulator and sound proofing material. However, wood ceiling are subject natural threat such as termites. Long term maintenance is therefore a cost consideration before deploying wooden ceilings.

Platerboard ceilings are made of gypsum making it lightweight, strong and easy to cut. It creates a smooth, hard, attractive surface that is easily decorated with paints or more plaster. The surface designs can be crafted before hardened but in most cases, plaster ceilings are pre-casted with mould. Plasterboard is prefabricated into sheets that attach to the ceiling with screws or nails and then are sealed. Plasterboards are not suitable for areas which are subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity. Temperatures over 50°C can induce a change of state in the plasterboard which would reduce its physical performance and serviceability.

Metal strip ceilings are a viable solution to the limitations of wooden and plasterboard ceilings. A drop or suspended metal ceiling also known as strip ceiling is a ceiling that hangs below a pre-existing ceiling and often hides unattractive features, such as pipes in a basement, or to control sound in a noisy location, such as an office. These ceilings are typically composed of wires and a metal grid that holds ceiling tiles. However, metal is also used as a decorative covering for a ceiling, usually found in embossed tiles or sheets.

Metal strip ceiling systems are a secure, easily maintained and durable method of upgrading a soffit or existing ceiling. The strength of steel combined with a sleek finish makes metal ceiling systems a premium addition to any construction project.
